Artist Inspiration: Dean McRaine
Meet Dean McRaine
This week we are featuring the work of Dean McRaine, a self-described "psychedelic colored clay artist" based in Kauai, Hawaii, with 35 years of experience making pottery and developing glazes. Dean owns Light Wave Pottery Studio, a fantastic place dedicated to the magic of creation and the alchemy of ceramics located in central Kapaa on the island of Kauai. He is known for his innovative process of using multi-colored slabs to create pieces with vivid color and intricate patterns that reflect his beautiful tropical home.
Please take a moment to check out Dean's artist statement and to watch the videos of his playful process below. It's truly amazing to watch him work and see the shapes and patterns emerge in the clay.
My goal as an artist is to create work that is beautiful and uplifting and brings joy to those who see it. I am self-taught. My journey has led me to explore many relatively untraveled paths in my search for beauty in ceramic art. Hence, many of my making techniques, glazes and firing processes are original and unique.
For me, making art is a playful occupation. I want my customers to also enjoy and have fun with my work. In everything I do I seek to express the beauty and brilliant color of higher dimensional realities.
Check out this amazing video below showing Dean's creating multicolored slabs and transforming them into gradient, patterned blocks using a process that can take up to two months to complete.
And, if you ever find yourself in Kauai, Dean is always happy to give a tour of the workshop and share his techniques.
